This year's target: Mt. Democrat.

We stayed the night in Silverthorne so that we wouldn't have to get up too ungodly early. On the way to the trailhead, we caught some fall colors.

Kite Lake Trailhead was our starting point, which is around 12,000 feet.

The first half was pretty easy, but by the time we hit the saddle, the talus was aplenty. Annoying to hike on, but the new views opening up made up for it.

And, without further ado, here's the view from the top at 14,148 feet.

And, his and hers truly.

Bonus: After the hike we had lunch in Breckenridge and completely unbeknownst to us stumbled across their Octoberfest party! The key takeaway from the event was that we'll soon be making this simple but super-fun game for y'all to play the next time you visit us!
I'll copy the links over to Facebook, but Mark and his company have proven to no longer be trustworthy stewards of my content.

The most recent example of this is:

If you don't like that picture, Mark, perhaps you'll prefer this one.

I'll be slowly removing all of my old content from Facebook, at least the stuff that I think I should keep, and relocating it here. Some of the conversations I had with you, my friends and family, were the best part of that content. If the conversation was something more than "Nice shot!" then I'll probably copy that over here, too. Because this is a public blog, I want to respect your privacy. If you see a conversation here that you participated in with me and would prefer that conversation be kept private, just let me know and I'll remove it.

To end on a positive note, I'd like to share a quote that I ran across while researching the original "Napalm Girl" photograph. That little girl turned out to be a wise and beautiful human being.

Forgiveness made me free from hatred. I still have many scars on my body and severe pain most days but my heart is cleansed. Napalm is very powerful, but faith, forgiveness, and love are much more powerful. We would not have war at all if everyone could learn how to live with true love, hope, and forgiveness. If that little girl in the picture can do it, ask yourself: Can you?

According to Google, 135 people viewed this old blog last month. What were they looking for? Did they find it? It's been a very long time since I've been here myself. So much in the world has changed in so little time.

This particular post was inspired by the discovery of the appallingly high count of dead links here in the blog. Digg no longer exists the way it did in the past. Google Video is dead. MySpace? What is it supposed to be now?

It seems that blogs and the Internet in general are pretty poor ways to archive information unless that information is copied word-for-word or pixel-by-pixel. But, what about copyright? How can we permanently share media in the digital age?
Two weeks ago, this situation would have been a Really Big Problem. Today it is not. The beautiful weather does not warrant the use of supplemental cooling systems.

The A/C normally provides a baseline level of sound so that when it is absent, an eerie sort of silence is revealed. All that you hear is motion and people. The clack-clack of the wheels on the tracks. The sniffles of noses. The muted whirr of the electric motors struggling against Newton's First Law of Motion. The squeak of tennis shoes on... whatever strange scientific miracle substance that makes up the speckled, palegreen floor.

The gentlemen to my left is brave enough to initiate a conversation on his cell phone. Because there is no other noise, everyone in our train car can hear every whisper. In his attempt to remain relatively quiet he needs to repeat himself often. He queries the other party "Did you get sumpthin to eat?" He asks this question four times. He makes another call, presumably to another party. "So, you get something to eat?" I can't decide whether I would be annoyed or comforted to have a friend whose function was to verify whether or not I ate breakfast each day. After all, it is The Most Important Meal of The DayTM.

I'd tie up this post with something profound about "eliminitating the noise in our daily lives" or something silly like that but I gotta run. Exit to Left..."Jonathanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07049917739619117524noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8653493.post-26078759940846238822009-10-08T15:53:00.001-07:002009-10-08T15:53:44.456-07:00Nearly Haiku

It makes one wonder for what alternative purposes the ice scoop was being utilized.Jonathanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07049917739619117524noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8653493.post-58353386738019331182009-10-06T22:31:00.006-07:002009-10-06T22:58:44.685-07:00Together Again...Sorry, blog. I know it's been a long time since we talked last. This is a bit awkward for me, but let me try to explain what happened.

I found Facebook. Facebook was so flashy, and had so many cool friends. Everybody loved Facebook and when she and I were hanging out, it felt like all her friends were my friends too. She knew everybody. She was the life of the party. It felt like everyone listened to what I had to say when I was with her.

And then there was Twitter. At first I couldn't figure out why she was so popular. She was just, like, a shorter version of you, right?! Then I realized that not only did Twitter have great friends, she had celebrity friends! OMG!! Shaq!! Oprah!! Danny frickin' DeVito!!! How could I not love her. I was caught up in a whirlwind! And then... When I learned that she was into "sharing" with Facebook... every man's dream, right?

So, blog. I know that it's been nearly two years since we last chatted. I know that I've neglected you for sexier technology. I know that I've treated you like crap.

And have you asked for forgiveness? No. You have just been here, patiently waiting for me to come back to you. No complaining. No talking about how I went astray. Here you are, welcoming me back with open arms. Hanging on to my every word in a saved draft, just in case my browser crashes. I may not be the most loyal man in the world when it comes to technology, but it's good knowing that I have someone I can depend on through thick and thin. I just want you to know that you were my first love. I promise that I'll try to do better, baby. I love you, blog.Jonathanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07049917739619117524noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8653493.post-39694473707217463952008-01-28T20:14:00.000-07:002018-08-29T18:24:36.330-07:00Boycott China :: This is Tough!Ellen and I were at Target the other day. There were a few items on the list, but only two presented some difficulty.

Soccer Ball: All of them were MIC (Made in China) except for one. Made in Pakistan. Great. Now I get to support a guy that suspended his country's constitution, and threw their Supreme Court in jail. At least the country is a Republic, so their is hope that they can get their act together.

Power Strip: Everybody needs these. So much to plug in, so few outlets where you need them. At Target, ALL the power strips were made by one company, and all of them were... say it with me... Made in China. So - I bought one. Not even one month through and I have already broken the rules. *sigh* But - I'm going to keep going. And for every China purchase I make ($6.99 so far), I'm going to donate an equal amount to an organization that will directly help the Chinese people that have been oppressed by their government. I'm open to suggestions on this... Feel free to make one in the comments.

---

A few days ago, I did some online shopping at Amazon. I temporarily forgot all about my boycott and just added a few things to my cart without a second thought. One of those things arrived today and guess what... MIC. I went back to the original product description and the country of manufacture is nowhere to be found. This is going to be tough. I have an invisible enemy.

There are two more purchases arriving soon from the same shopping spree. Neither of them mention the country of manufacture in the description. I have a bad feeling about both of them, but maybe I'll get lucky. I'll keep you posted.Jonathanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07049917739619117524noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8653493.post-58755960887452471492008-01-10T19:06:00.002-07:002018-08-29T18:24:42.724-07:00Boycott China :: It BeginsI officially have a 2008 New Year's Resolution:
I'm going to attempt to avoid buying anything "Made in China" this year.

Why?

Mostly because China censors their Internetz, poisons children, forces women to get abortions, takes US jobs and beats up their own citizens for filming them beat up other citizens. Also - because I like a challenge.

Thankfully, I've already purchased my Chumby and my XO Laptop; both made in China. I agree that it's going to be difficult to justify abstaining from some of these purchases, especially a product like the XO that, theoretically, is going to be doing so much good for the children of the world. There are certainly some very complex equations to solve in the global marketplace. But - for now - at least I will feel like I'm doing something to make the world a better place.

My First Non-Purchase

My first substitution was at Target. I wanted to buy a new beard trimmer after my previous one died on me. Like I normally do, I shopped around online for a while and settled on a model from Remington that had received good reviews. Notice that the country of manufacture is not listed in the product information. However, I had already decided to purchase this locally due to shipping costs, so no problem there. Off to the store... and... yep... Made in China. So, instead, I looked at the rest of the products on the rack and ended up with a model from Wahl that proudly declared "Assembled in the USA." It works fine, but yesterday I noticed on one of the plastic trimmer guides, stamped in tiny letters: CHINA.Jonathanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07049917739619117524noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8653493.post-79932658475867283412007-12-21T22:58:00.001-07:002007-12-21T22:58:58.819-07:00Examine
Make for thyself a definition or description
of the thing which is presented to thee,so as
to see it distinctly what kind of thing it is,
in its substance,in its nudity,in its complete
entirety, and tell thyself its proper name,
and the names of the things of which it has
been compounded, and into which it will be
resolved.

For nothing is so productive of
elevation of mind as to be able to examine
methodically and truly every object which is
presented to thee in life, and always to look
at things so as to see at the same time what
kind of universe this is,and what kind of use
everything performs in it,and what value
everything has with reference to the whole,
and what with reference to man,who is a
citizen of the highest city,of which all other
cities are like families; what each thing is,and
of what it is composed, and how long it is the
nature of this thing to endure.

-Marcus Aurelius AntoninusJonathanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07049917739619117524noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8653493.post-1786679303312177702007-11-30T13:31:00.000-07:002007-11-30T13:52:34.581-07:00Energy CrisisI just went out for lunch (mmm... chimichanga).
It's like MySpace is taking a cue from the evening news previews. They don't tell you the whole story right away. Breaking News! Details at 7! Now watch this commercial...

You have been invited to join a MySpace Group! But you must log in to see which group. Oh - and make sure that the banner ad across the top loads first so that we can get paid. Yes - I know it's a free service - but how about a text ad at the bottom of my email? I don't want to take the time to open my browser and log in just to find out that I'm invited to join the fanclub for a band in Kalamazoo...
Ellen and I closed on the townhouse downtown and we'll be moving in tomorrow! Yippe! Ask me if you need the address.

In other news:

I made an unexpected trip to Washington, D.C. March 1-5, to help out Dad. It was certainly a relief to see him doing well after his surgery and to be able to help him on the road to recovery. As a happy bonus, I was also able to meet my newest niece!

I saw my favorite jazz pianist, Chick Corea, on 3/12. He played with...

Touchstone featuring world-class Flamenco/jazz musicians, formerly members of guitarist great, Paco de Lucia's band; Jorge Pardo - sax and flute, Carles Benavent - bass, Rubem Dantas - percussion, and long-time Corea collaborator Tom Brechtlein on drums. Special guest appearance by Spanish Dancer, Auxi Fernandez.

Ellen and I have also recently invested in some new downtown transportation. We're planning to take our Breezer bikes pretty much everywhere we can including grocery shopping, and for me, to work a few days a week. So far we've been making quite a few evening and weekend trips around town. The weather has been perfect for riding. My short-lived infatuation with the Kronan is over... for now.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8653493.post-1138925280432630712006-02-02T16:57:00.000-07:002006-02-03T10:59:11.180-07:00End of Another EraAs if a new place to live wasn't enough, I found a new job too! After eight years of working at Insurers Administrative Corp., I've finally decided to move on.

I'll be working with Phoenix Fuel Co. Now, now, don't be like that! I know it's an oil related industry, but you drive a car, right? You buy things in stores that need to be delivered by trucks and trains and such, right? Now that I've justified... I'm really excited about the opportunity. I'll be their first programmer so I have the opportunity to start doing things "the right way" for the new company and shaking off some of my bad "get-it-out-the-door-quick" programming habits. They have a big pile of data waiting for me so I also hope to have a nice variety of projects that I can work on rather than being stuck as a one-trick pony. I proposed marriage to my love last night. She said yes! The proposal occurred at the location of our first date just over a year ago: the AZ State Fair, post-demolition derby. Classy? Heck yeah. Ellen has a love for photo booths (black and white only, please) so I found one at the fair, dropped in a token and took a knee. You'll see the photo strip here as soon as I scan it in. So here it is. The official announcement online. Yep. Computer nerd here. Family members should expect a call later today, though.
